Weekly Newsletter

Dear 2A Families,

We have had a terrific first week of second grade!  The students are eager to learn and share!  Most of our week has focused on learning classroom routines and getting to know each other.  Most days, the students are able to fill out their behavior calendar in their take-home folder.  Please make sure to check the folder each day for important assignments and notes.  Anything on the “Bring Back” side of the folder is important for students to return to school.  I sent home a Student Information Sheet on the first day of school.  Please make sure to fill this out and return it to me no later than Monday, September 9th . Thank you to those who have turned it in already with the letter about your child.  It helps me get to know the students and plan instructional goals for the year.

In reading, we are learning three ways to read a book (read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story).  We have also learned how to select “Good-Fit” books.  You can help your child do this at home, too!  In writing, we are writing about a favorite place and our summer vacation memories.  In math, we are learning strategies to use when we add and we are practicing these with our basic addition facts 0-20.  Next week, we will learn more about fact families and practice with inequalities (greater than, less than, and equal to).  In science, we learned how scientists discover what they know and we used our five senses to observe our environment.  In religion, we are practicing our prayers and reflecting on gratitude.  Mrs. Framel (our school counselor) will see the students on Fridays to work on social-emotional development and problem-solving skills.

PE is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please have your child wear athletic/tennis shoes on these days for PE.  We will not be needing PE shoes at this time, so I will be sending them back home in your child’s backpack.

Homework begins this week!  The packet will be sent home on Friday and is due the following Friday (September 13th).  We are also starting spelling this week with our first test on Friday, September 13th.  More details are coming home tomorrow!

Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 11th.  It begins at 6:00 pm with a general meeting in the parish hall.  Classroom sessions will follow.  Please plan to attend for the evening and make sure to visit our classroom to learn more about your child’s learning!  I hope to have a list of important dates regarding First Reconciliation and First Communion.  It is best to put all of these dates on your calendar early in the school year as there are several required meetings and events that are important for you to attend as you help prepare your child for these special sacraments.

I look forward to meeting you all and working with you this school year!

Blessings,

Mrs. Nicole Martin
