Weekly Update, February 24, 2020

Dear 2A Families,

I hope you have enjoyed a little sunshine over the past week.  The students and I think that maybe the groundhog was correct this year!  On Friday, we celebrated the 100th day of school.  We enjoyed counting 100 steps from the gym to the big toy on Friday.  For word work, we wrote 100 words using five different categories.  The Kindergarten students led a parade and counted to 100 to start our day!  Next week, we will continue practicing addition of two-digit numbers.  We will also learn to estimate sums and practice rounding to the nearest ten.  In science, we are learning about simple machines.  We have learned about an inclined plane (ramp), wedge (nail, scissors, doorstop, and more).  We enjoyed watching a video of a German nicknamed “Lego Grandma” who builds ramps out of Legos to make areas more wheelchair accessible.  We also used our two front teeth to bite a carrot.  This helped us realize that our two front teeth are wedges!  Take a little family walk through a park or the neighborhood to see how many inclined planes or ramps you can see.  We will learn about the lever, wheel and axle, screw, and pulley this week.  In reading, we will study two comprehension strategies:  Author’s Purpose and Inferencing.  We will also read from our Treasures series, Babu’s Song and focus on retelling a story in sequence.  In religion, we will begin our preparation for Lent and reflect on what we can Fast from and Feast on this Lent.  In writing, we will be looking at picture books to observe transition words and how we can use these in our own writing.  We will also learn about dental health in social studies.
